Dynamic Adaptive Point Cloud Streaming
High-quality point clouds have recently gained interest as an emerging form
of representing immersive 3D graphics. Unfortunately, these 3D media are bulky
and severely bandwidth intensive, which makes it difficult for streaming to
resource-limited and mobile devices. This has called researchers to propose
efficient and adaptive approaches for streaming of high-quality point clouds.
In this paper, we run a pilot study towards dynamic adaptive point cloud
streaming, and extend the concept of dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP
(DASH) towards DASH-PC, a dynamic adaptive bandwidth-efficient and view-aware
point cloud streaming system. DASH-PC can tackle the huge bandwidth demands of
dense point cloud streaming while at the same time can semantically link to
human visual acuity to maintain high visual quality when needed. In order to
describe the various quality representations, we propose multiple thinning
approaches to spatially sub-sample point clouds in the 3D space, and design a
DASH Media Presentation Description manifest specific for point cloud
streaming. Our initial evaluations show that we can achieve significant
bandwidth and performance improvement on dense point cloud streaming with minor
negative quality impacts compared to the baseline scenario when no adaptations

Physiology-Aware Rural Ambulance Routing
In emergency patient transport from rural medical facility to center tertiary
hospital, real-time monitoring of the patient in the ambulance by a physician
expert at the tertiary center is crucial. While telemetry healthcare services
using mobile networks may enable remote real-time monitoring of transported
patients, physiologic measures and tracking are at least as important and
requires the existence of high-fidelity communication coverage. However, the
wireless networks along the roads especially in rural areas can range from 4G
to low-speed 2G, some parts with communication breakage. From a patient care
perspective, transport during critical illness can make route selection patient
state dependent. Prompt decisions with the relative advantage of a longer more
secure bandwidth route versus a shorter, more rapid transport route but with
less secure bandwidth must be made. The trade-off between route selection and
the quality of wireless communication is an important optimization problem
which unfortunately has remained unaddressed by prior work.
In this paper, we propose a novel physiology-aware route scheduling approach
for emergency ambulance transport of rural patients with acute, high risk
diseases in need of continuous remote monitoring. We mathematically model the
problem into an NP-hard graph theory problem, and approximate a solution based
on a trade-off between communication coverage and shortest path. We profile
communication along two major routes in a large rural hospital settings in
Illinois, and use the traces to manifest the concept. Further, we design our
algorithms and run preliminary experiments for scalability analysis. We believe
that our scheduling techniques can become a compelling aid that enables an
always-connected remote monitoring system in emergency patient transfer
scenarios aimed to prevent morbidity and mortality with early diagnosis

Strain induced mobility modulation in single-layer MoS
In this paper the effect of biaxial and uniaxial strain on the mobility of
single-layer MoS for temperatures T 100 K is investigated. Scattering
from intrinsic phonon modes, remote phonon and charged impurities are
considered along with static screening. Ab-initio simulations are utilized to
investigate the strain induced effects on the electronic bandstructure and the
linearized Boltzmann transport equation is used to evaluate the low-field
mobility under various strain conditions. The results indicate that the
mobility increases with tensile biaxial and tensile uniaxial strain along the
armchair direction. Under compressive strain, however, the mobility exhibits a
non-monotonic behavior when the strain magnitude is varied. In particular, with
a relatively small compressive strain of 1% the mobility is reduced by about a
factor of two compared to the unstrained condition, but with a larger
compressive strain the mobility partly recovers such a degradation
